A whole chicken wing refers to the entire wing as it comes from the chicken, before being separated into the typical parts most people see in stores. It includes three sections:
Wingette (Flat) – The middle section with two parallel bones, tender meat, and skin.
Drumette – The section closest to the body, shaped like a small drumstick, with one larger bone and more meat.
Tip – The pointed end of the wing, usually skin and bone with very little meat; sometimes it’s left on, sometimes removed depending on packaging.
So a “whole wing” is the wing with drumette + wingette + tip all attached, giving you maximum flexibility for recipes like roasting, smoking, or cutting into classic drumettes and flats for wings.
